Derek Wilkinson was born in the city of Halifax in the year 1929. He studied art at Blackpool School of Art from 1946 to 1950, then at Manchester’s Regional College of Art from 1951 to 1953, before serving in the army and working for the Metal Box Company for five years.
Derek then started working in the department of art and design at Stockport College in 1958, eventually rising to the position of senior professor in charge of foundation studies until 1989. Derek was a MAFA member who also exhibited in group exhibitions at the RA, RBA, Middlesbrough Drawing Biennale, and Laing Exhibition. In London, Manchester, Preston, Stockport, Derby, Carlisle, Kendal, and Blackpool, he had a series of solo exhibits. Public galleries in Oldham, Salford, Sheffield, Stockport and the Walker Art Gallery all have examples of his work.
