Derek Wilkinson was born in Halifax in 1929. He attended Blackpool School of Art, 1946-50, then Regional College of Art in Manchester, from 1951-3 he did National Service then worked with Metal Box Company for 5 years.

Derek then began in 1958 to work in department of art and design at Stockport College, latterly he became senior lecturer in charge of foundation studies until 1989. Derek was a member of MAFA, also taking part in group shows at RA, RBA, Middlesbrough Drawing Biennale and Laing Exhibition. Had a series of solo exhibitions in London, Manchester, Preston, Stockport, Derby, Carlisle, Kendal and Blackpool. Examples of his work can be found in public galleries in Oldham, Salford, Sheffield, Stockport & Walker Art Gallery.
