Biography of Artist

Norman Long (BA, MAFA) has established a reputation among the foremost figurative artists in the UK. His oil portraits have twice been featured in the BP portrait award and Royal Society of Portrait Painters exhibitions and most recently he was awarded the coveted de Laszlo Award for portraiture.

Born in 1976, Norman has been a professional artist for 12 years. When he emerged on the gallery scene in 2009, his rigorous background in portraiture was immediately evident in his sensitive figurative works. These, and his painterly still life paintings of everyday objects, are now highly in demand.

Norman’s figurative works frequently depict people in public places, where fascinating relationships arise. There is often a mysterious sense of a story unfolding, yet the threads of the narrative are rarely tied down by the artist, leaving the viewer to complete the picture. Inspired by artists such as Degas and Edward Hopper, his exquisite draughtsmanship and understanding of light allow him to bring the excitement of a momentary gesture to the canvas.
