Biography of Artist

Born 1950 in York, and now lives in Bradford. His art education was initially at York College of Art, then Liverpool Art College, and finally at the Royal Academy of Arts, 1974-77, where he gained the Creswick Prize and Landseer Prize for respectively his landscape and figure work.
Jake is a figurative artist in the sense that everything he paints is based on something he has observed and almost certainly drawn. No matter how far the paintings may depart from the subject that inspired them, they are nevertheless rooted in that dependence upon those initial observations.Jake love’s the medium of oils – it excites him and he finds you can make an image of the world more convincing in oils than in any other media. Despite exploring the abstract, Jake is always drawn back to the figurative, one of his is strong influences is the Flemish artist Pieter Bruegel.
His work has been exhibited widely at solo shows across Britain, including at Cartwright Hall, Bradford, and in Holland, Germany and the USA. Jake’s work can be found in public art galleries in the North of England at York, Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, and at the University of Sheffield. The Nuffield Trust and ‘Paintings in Hospitals’ project has acquired his work, and it has also been bought for private collections worldwide.
